The Pop-up Gym invites the surrounding inhabitants to engage in active activities by occupying the open space of parks and schools during the times of a pandemic society. Using the open space at the St. Gabriel Catholic School in Toronto as an experimentation ground, the project incorporates new outdoor sport facilities while making use of the existing. By introducing new sport facilities through different configurations of obstacle courses such as balancing beams and hopping logs, the design encourages inhabitants of all ages to remain active while meeting the social distancing standards. This is an alternative to the questionable safety of using indoor fitness centers, closure of shared amenities in condominiums and the loneliness of homemade gyms. As schools are often located in residential areas, it also provide the local inhabitants with greater accessibility to fitness areas than those located in commercial centers. The project is also an opportunity for private gyms and public schools to cooperate in order to innovate the current fitness technologies and to renovate the old sport facilities of the school. Thus the design of the Pop-up Gym seeks to encourage an active lifestyle that meets the health standards while combating the restrictions of a pandemic society.
