New York City has been under the depression of the vacancy of social life and the close-down of small dining businesses since the spread of COVID-19. Citizens are forced to seek for interstitial breaths within the “Pandemic Society”. This project looks at Koreatown in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, one of the busiest districts populated by both people and restaurants.
This project reimagines West 32th street as a car-free zone that provides multiple isolated walkways, each connected to designated restaurants, aiming to provide passengers a clear and fast guide to the food of their choice at a glance. The circulations of the pedestrians are directed by three color-coded walkways, visitors can download the restaurant map before entering the district to ensure store hours as well as the specific path to access the restaurant. Social distancing is practiced through one-way restriction on both sides of the street as well as the seating areas in between, various intersections are also provided to allow more flexibility to go around the stores. This project hopes to explore fun experiences to diners as well as safe possibilities to the future of neighborhood restaurants.
