-FINALIST of FUTURE PUBLIC SPACE Competition
Public space is nature and nature used to be public space. Going on with centuries, the humankind has been imposing a strictly urban and homocentric conception of public and liveable spaces. The city has been generated to guarantee security and mutual protection, fighting against the wilderness. 2019 has been declared the hottest year in human history (NOAA). Earth’s natural balance is being compromised and soon it will be irreversible. Climate changes will have an impact on the economy, on human society and will have political repercussions; the first and the easiest to predict are the physical and biological effects. Biodiversity will be under stress and the risk of extinction will increase. The deterioration of the coasts, the change of the rain regime, the melting of the glaciers will have repercussions on agriculture. The percentage of habitable areas will decrease due to desertification and the increase of extreme natural events and will lead to face millions of Climate refugees. The migration of plants will be preceded by animals, but also by micro-organisms. What if everything wild disappears and the cities became the only possible refuges for life? How could human coexist with the wilderness?
