-FINALIST of FUTURE PUBLIC SPACE Competition
Our resolution aims to function as a typos, in the variety of public spaces of metropolitan cities. In this specific case, Kotzia Square, located in the centre of Athens, is our reference site.
Thinking of a system where water acts as a gathering, bordering, and revitalising/cooling element in urban spaces, we intent to transform the natural conditions of these. This system collects waste grey water from urban apartments into their roofs, where a cleaning stage of water treats and directs it to the centralised public space of the neighbourhoods. The roads, with new water trails and green elements, create a path towards the squares. Public spaces
are now fed with the water from homes.
On the square, water acts as a slowing device in between the urban flux while redefining the archetypes of public space as established in the Ancient Greek Agora (centre of social, artistic, commercial, and political life). The central element expresses the square as a contemporary “monument” of the city in which, every space represents a water moment/treatment phase, creating layers that increase community interaction from outside in.
The stoá, as the first zone, uses water as a cooling/distancing element and a transition to the Agora.
The baths, (in between zone) are a cleaning tool for community, that shape the interior space of the square.
The amphitheatre (drinking zone) where water represents a resource and social/gathering tool that brings people together.
Water, a universal primary resource, functions for the community as a social catalysator and attractor, whereas regardless ethnicity, culture and social position, public space belongs to every individual.
