-FINALIST of FUTURE PUBLIC SPACE Competition
During the lockdown period courtyards, as well as other pertinent spaces of houses, have been used as extensions of housing and replaced the public spaces that were inaccessible at the time.
Hence the incipit to re-evaluate courtyards as possible public places, seeing them as Commons, thus as resources that can be unlocked through the intervention of a group of people united by similar needs.
The purpose is to define a design system concerning their property divisions, surfaces, and functions of the ground floors, previously unused, that apply to a large scale in an ordinary urban fabric.
The property partition walls can be rethought as elements that allow the physical or visual connection between the courtyards, such as storages or new rooms for the inhabitants. The result of this operation would produce more frequented and other more isolated areas corresponding to different levels of permeability of the redesigned walls.
These tools are designed to be provided directly to citizens who can put them into practice independently or with the help of professionals thanks to the use of an operational manual that will help them educate themselves and recognize the potential of the courtyard they live.
