-HONOURABLE MENTION of Non Architecture Award Competition | Category: Urban
This project deals with the solution of wastewater pollution. The site lies in Kota, the city of Rajasthan in India which is working on a smart city mission but the irony is Kota ranks 4th position out of the top 10 dirtiest cities in India (Times of India, 2020). And the major reasons for this are illiteracy, open drainages, and the lack of infrastructure to treat them.
In the design wastewater is playing two roles. One being waste as awareness, serves the purpose of evoking realization among the visitors and waste as a resource that serves the purpose of creating valuable things from wastewater bi-products by using the principle of R. Buckminster Fuller, Ephemeralization. Ephemeralization is the ability of technological advancement to do “more and more with less and less until eventually, you can do everything with nothing” and here nothing is taken as wastewater.
As public utility areas are the most neglected space in the cityscape because of no public accessibility in these zones. So how can the public understand the concern of ‘them being responsible for decaying aqua life by their daily negligence of throwing waste into streams’ if they cannot witness the process of treatment of their negligence? This problem can be addressed architecturally by providing innovation in STP mainstream design that engages with better user experience and the desirable requirements in design that generate awareness through exhibiting wastewater and its changing form. And it is important to acknowledge and educate dwellers of every city that their carelessness and action could result in shaping clean water into a futile element as this is one of the major reasons for the deterioration of the Chambal River. Awareness can only be generated when someone spectator the failure or volunteers in improving it or both.
Project Type: Awareness generation among the public and solving community problem by transforming grey water to clean water.
