¨… make a mountain with a grain of sand… ̈
Fuerteventura Island was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2009. ¨Corralejo National Dune Park¨ is located at the north. This was defined by UNESCO:“Core Area”. This zone is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the island. Its coastline has been invaded by a predator tourist urban development. In order to change the current urban model, this project proposes a simple intervention;
¨invasion with endemic vegetation inside the urban spaces… so that natural forces can design a new sand urban landscape¨.
Winds from the Sahara, marine currents, sun, dunes and endemic vegetation ( ̈Aulaga Canaria ̈ plant – Launaea arborescens and ̈Balancón ̈ plant – Traganum moquinii) help to transform the existing urban spaces in a new ¨natural-urban landscape¨.
These elements are use as a matrix for a new ̈urban – antiurban landscape ̈, where the streets, squares, and other public spaces are invaded for the sand or ̈Nebkha Dunes ̈ (a type of dune generated with the support of the endemic vegetation).
Sand arrives from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and also the ̈Calima ̈ (winds saturated with sand arrived from Sahara Desert) The project uses ̈Nebka dunes ̈ for create a new urban landscape where the sediments invade the coastline and free urban spaces (public or private). How can new Nebkhas be created? It is very easy; endemic vegetation will be planted everywhere…
In a matter of time, nature and ecosystems will do their work.
Project Type: Regeneration of urban landscape inside ¨Corralejo National Park¨. Fuerteventura Island, Canary Islands, Spain.
