Transport infrastructure is ideally used to connect people and places. Community severance is caused when this infrastructure creates a barrier for people to access amenities, services, or personal networks at a local level. The focus area for our proposal lies in Greater Mumbai (India); the core city of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Although rail infrastructure in Mumbai helps in physically connecting the local population at a macro level, it has adverse effects on the lives of people living on either side of that same infrastructure. At present, the railway lines and the existing railway yard splits the neighborhood by acting as a physical, social and communal border between the Hindu and Muslim populations living on either side of the railway infrastructure.
Therefore, for this proposal, we have attempted to study the severance caused by the railway infrastructure in the Sandhurst Road station area in Mumbai. Our design solutions are based on the principles of transit-oriented development for mitigating the social, physical and physiological impacts of community severance. A public plaza connecting the Sandhurst Road station to the Green line station, has been proposed to serve as a community gathering zone to help improve the physical and social connections in the neighborhood. Moreover, high density cultural and educational mix of land uses, community hotspots, varying sizes of open spaces connected to a pedestrian network and permeable blocks with wide footpaths for walking and cycling have also been incorporated in design to counter the impact of community severance and barrier effects.
