-HONOURABLE MENTION of Non Architecture Award 2022 Competition | Category: Aspatial & Virtual
The Site Convent is an international architectural competition for a location on the site of the ruins of the Penafirme Monastery in Portugal. The Site convent is a space that “attracts” the visitor and re-examines the relationship between the existing architecture of ruins and the newly designed structure. The dialogue between the new and the old is reconciled by maintaining the authentic existing atmosphere, which exudes a spectacular game of constantly moving terrain, caused by the appearance of sand dunes, specific to this location. The dramaturgy of the space is especially emphasized, where the movement of visitors may seem random, but it is designed with the intention of enabling “freedom of movement”, as is the characteristic of sand. The basic concept relies on the dynamic movement of sand dunes, which are in fact an authentic phenomenon of the location of Penafirme Convent, with the aim of emphasizing the fluidity of space. Inspired by the fact that sand dunes are formed where the wind carries loose sand, we conveyed the same atmosphere in the part where the Inner space is planned. Located below the water surface on the top floor, and above the open ground floor whose ceiling is made of glass, it gives visitors the experience of an indefinitely landscape, observing the space through the layers above or below. In every part of the building, the space provides visitors with shelter and intimacy, while the program in no way endangers the existing condition and ruins, but on the contrary, unobtrusively reanimates the entire complex and the landscape in which it is located.

The Embowering Space shows an intriguing approach on making space, without making effectively one: the use of sand dunes as the foundation of the project results in a relationship with the existing structure that is constantly challenged and reinvented. Nevertheless, this last point could have been developed in a more radical way.
