-HONOURABLE MENTION of Non Architecture Award 2022 Competition | Category: Urban & Landscape
Common Ground is an architectural pattern, a spatial organisation system aiming to answer the needs of various functions. Based on the rational functioning of a typical underground parking lot, its plan can be modified on demand to adapt and react to the diversity of scales and temporalities of the activities it accommodates. This adaptable space can thus welcome the mobility practices mutations (long timing), and answer the needs of a small company in development (short timing). They can be led in parallel within the same flexible structure.
In order to reveal and experiment the groundspace, the intervention proposes a panel of actions on the generic architecture as well as on the specific public space around. The project reuse the construction frame and the building’s rational organization to design an underground livable space, but it’s also searching for connections with the city and all the contextual functions to create an urban address. A particular attention is given to the input of direct light and fresh air which are essential to complete the project.
Affirmed as a manifesto of the metropolitan’s evolution, Common Ground is both a generic and contextualized project: a transposable architecture which can welcome specific uses for each era and situation. Euralille underground car park is taken as an illustration of the potential for change in our uses and urbanscapes.
