Our project focuses on creating a unique coffee shop experience that goes beyond just serving drinks and food. The three-level building features an adaptive system of spaces and internal connections that allow a variety of uses. The main level serves as a public area with a coffee shop, but also doubles as a cultural center with a lecture hall and library. The lower level houses an office and the upper level includes a private area for employees and their friends. Guests can also stay in “hut” rooms that blend seamlessly with the surrounding mountain landscape. There are also a skatepark near the gardens and a separate radio cabin as a symbol of students’ culture.
The design of the building is centered around the principle of flexibility in the use of spaces in connection with nature. Instead of designing the building based on specific functions, such as sleeping or eating, we’ve introduced the concept of “archetypes”. These are bright, recognizable spaces that offer different possibilities and each has its own unique atmosphere.
All archetypes are embedded within a neutral, rigid structural frame. We’ve used the concept of “temperature” for spaces — public spaces are “hot”, private spaces are “cold”, and semi-public spaces are “warm”.
The style of the space is inspired by California modernism and industrial buildings’ constructions. The Campus is seamlessly integrated into the surrounding landscape, with walls that double as windows and industrial framings weaving with nature. It features simple and elegant shapes, honest materials, and a lot of greenery.
