Imagine an architectural project in the density of its fabric and in which primacy is given to the transhistorical values of the quality of space-time. Contrary to the majority of competitions in architecture, this master project was an opportunity to think the project not from an imposed program, but by composing it from a chosen city narrative. It was based on an understanding of the socio-economic and cultural issues and the urban complexity of the Saint-Charles-Porte d’Aix district. In the midst of a major transformation, this area is now asserting itself as the future urban campus of Marseille and raises the question of its requalification.
How to define the program and fit it into the ambition of the site?
In order to “revitalize” the district, the city has adopted a gentrification policy. But isn’t it preferable, rather than inserting a new population to solve social problems, to carry out a project that listens to the local inhabitants? It is in this context that the idea of the recycling center was born. This project does not aim to solve all the problems, only to integrate the local population and to propose a certain free space. The local inhabitants, as well as the waste that we could see on the spot, represent a richness that can be a real project material.
