– FINALIST of REVIVING MINES: SHANDONG PARK Competition
In the east side of the Zichuan district the extraction activities of the mines have been terminated leaving the mountainous landscape with voids. The project aims to inhabit these voids.
It is placed in a region defined by a hill surrounded by roads, local communities and abandoned mines. The proposed forms are shaped by the geometry of the landscape and specifically that of the mine pits. By creating structures that embrace or fill mine voids, a park with places that host different activities is formed. The activities address local producers as well as tourists interested in local culture. They concern rural products, local crafts, shops, exhibitions, recreational and educational spaces where tourists can attend workshops, learn and create their own art work.
The info point and bike station (mine 1) of the park, with a form that embraces the mine, enables visitors to access its roof which consists an integral part of the cyclist and pedestrian route. All structures are connected with bike routes creating a network of spaces that form a cultural and creative park for locals and tourists, bringing new life into the region and enhancing the economy.
