– FINALIST of REVIVING MINES: SHANDONG PARK Competition
As I walk towards the quarry I look up, the dark blue sky looks down at us. Me, and my kids, we walk slowly, smelling the air. I carry the tents and the pot, my kids carry the chairs, the oldest has the grill, even the little one is carrying a mug, a blue one, she said that it looked like a tiny lake. I think of the lady who gave us all of this, the smile on her face as she told us that all the pottery was made by his son and that she and her friends made the fabrics that cover the tents.
We chose our camping place, a little up-hill, in the middle of an old quarry. My kids started to imitate the movements of the old miners, trying to move the rocks with imaginary picks and hammers. We set the tents, one was red with flowers, the other one was red with golden, my youngest kid chose that one, she said it looked like candy. We lighted up the fire, ate, and then went to bed, I was sleeping with one of my kids, his eyes fixed in the sky, and he said he saw a shooting star. I woke up early and waited in one of the chairs, my kids joined me. We stared at the white quarries and the trees, my son’s voice took me out of my thoughts “Dad, I never thought an old mine could be this beautiful”.
