– FINALIST of REVIVING MINES: SHANDONG PARK Competition
From the Tale of Lady Meng Jiang to the epicentre of Qi; a veil of mysteries shrouds the abandoned mining valley and pit lake that hold layers of tragically beautiful history. Mining pilgrims descended the steps towards the Temple Tank – where water from the quarry pool acts as the spiritual medium to gather kinsfolk during the Water Lantern Festival. The calming sounds of moving water reverence the sacrifice made by our fallen miners.
The Emperor’s Carbon or the Coal Mining Museum is connected by trench-like subterranean passageways, that were elaborately carved out from stone quarry walls forming terraces, chambers, and cave-dwellings; built to honour Zibo’s imperial legacy as an Underground Relic City.
The scenic museum is rebuilt by converting abandoned miners’ homes into festive markets and Winter wonderland. Rows of local stalls selling textile, porcelain, and ceramics along the riverbank aim to celebrate Zibo’s ancient arts and industrial culture.
Contrasting elements between the industrial grandeur of the rustic Colliery against the scarred mining landscape evoke emotion, memories, and imagination – reminiscing the moment when Coal was king. This place is the new beacon to Shandong’s Mining Cultural heritage for economic growth and tourism revival while protecting its ancient legacy.
