-HONOURABLE MENTION of Amsterdam Cycling Bridge Competition
In fact, that Sphere we created suspended above the IJ river doesn’t disturb the urban texture of Amsterdam, but it’s weightless and absurd appearance brings a sense of mystery to the city. Compared with the hustle and bustle of the city, that Sphere itself appears abrupt and cannot be integrated into the city releasing a curious attraction like a miniature black hole, which makes people curious about the state hiding in the internal space of that Sphere.
There are two bicycle bridges connecting that Sphere whose width gradually narrows toward the sphere creating a new bicycle crossing line for Amsterdam. Citizens could only reach both sides of the canal through the subway, ferries and bridges in the past. During the process, they are forced to leave the city temporarily and unconsciously. Unless extreme senses are involved the state is extremely normal and doesn’t make people realize that such a fracture zone appears in the city. Therefore, that Sphere has a pure white and bright space inside as a way to isolate the city. Time and space are erased by the endless white and only the entrance and exit can reveal the outside world. As a result, the complete rupture of the urban experience makes people more sensitive to space and the moment of crossing indoors and outdoors can re-bridge the urban experience. In addition to connecting bicycle lines, it also plans a unique urban space experience for Amsterdam.
