-HONOURABLE MENTION of Amsterdam Cycling Bridge Competition
In Greenland, 14,000 tonnes of ice melt per second. For the Netherlands, half of whose country lies below sea level, this is horror news. But that does not shake the Dutch. They have fought the battle against the North Sea for centuries and have always won. They have partly created their own land by draining it. The drained landscapes that lie below sea level are called polders.
But how long can a country fight against the climate?
This fight against nature can only be lost. People need to start investing less in fighting the effects. And start addressing the symptoms of the climate crisis. No bridge, no dike, no matter how sophisticated, can withstand the collapse. You only delay it. Our design deals with a kind of look into the future. How will the city of Amsterdam change if no long-term action is taken?
With our theoretical dystopian urban sculpture, we make it clear that the result will be a completely elevated and bridged city that can hardly contain the qualities of its past. In our approach, we create a kind of memorial & dystopia, formed of steel, which must once again show humanity that we are on the verge of destroying our environment.
