-HONOURABLE MENTION of Amsterdam Cycling Bridge Competition
A global declining biodiversity threatens our ecosystems. In search of local solutions we tap into the largely unused potential of the IJ-river to boost the biodiversity of Amsterdam.
One single element forms the building block for the whole structure: base, tower and path. By it’s geometry, this element can be applied in different ways, offering different qualities and purposes in different parts of the structure.
In its linear configuration, the elements provide routes across the river; a sky route for cyclists, a floating route for pedestrians. The lower route features a rotatable part which allows ships to pass. Floating platforms along the way offer space for rest and recreation.
In their radial configuration, the elements form the bridge’s pylons, but also offer habitats. Below water the configuration acts as an artificial reef for shellfish and vegetation, simultaneously improving water quality. In addition, the cavities in the columns offer habitat to underwater life to boost local biodiversity. Above water, the elements host trees and plants, offering an attractive ecosystem for insects, bats and birds.
Nature is invited to live in symbiosis with this structure. This Ecostructure signals a future where humans, plants and animals live together in the city of Amsterdam.
