-EDITORIAL PICK of Amsterdam Cycling Bridge Competition
Hinge opens up the IJ River for more than just cargo travel. As a physical mapping of various transportation flows across the river, Hinge allows for bicycle travel across a 6% sloped path, while a stepped path allows for pedestrians and people to gather. A pier becomes the central hinge for the river, both anchoring the mechanisms that allow the bridge to swing open when large ships pass or provide a gather point for people to admire and inhabit the IJ River. However, the IJ River is not just home to humans, and in line with Netherlands tradition of valuing landscape and habitat, our bridge acknowledges that restored ecosystems are important for instilling a sustainable future. The cycling bridge, Hinge, fosters a smaller boat channel in similar dimension to Amsterdam’s canals, and the raised riverbed allows for a tiny sanctuary for small water plants to grow. From Sail Day to Pride Parade, we anticipate the bridge serving as an anchoring point for several water-based Amsterdam events, allowing the city to reclaim its presence on the IJ for both cultural, transportational, and logistical means.
