-EDITORIAL PICK of Amsterdam Cycling Bridge Competition
Our proposal is a combination of urban mobility and biodiverse territory.
Two bridges create a fixed and fast connection as a main loop circle route; a walk on water between Java, KNSM-Island and the Hamerkwartier.
In between IJ-Garden-Island arises as a place for nature to recover. Now the national ecological network runs across the Oranje-locks. It is desirable to expand this network with a ‘nature-hub’ that makes extra ecological routes possible, from Flevopark via IJ-Garden-Island to the Vliegenbos.
The bridges are made up of post-tensioned hollow concrete segments, which form a stretched arch over the water and are supported by large diameter pillars. It will provide pedestrians, joggers, cyclists and inline-skaters a 2,330 meter route. The bottom of the bridge can supply shelter for the Amsterdam bat population.
Our plan proposes 3,2 ha of new land for nature to sprout, 530 meters longer border for birds and other aquatic animals to come ashore. Space for at least 2,200 Dutch Elms to grow. It could become a reserve for more than 1,000 plants and animal species.
A new landscape, more than a concrete cycling bridge, an IJ-Garden-Concervancy for nature protection and education to propagate circular ideas.
