-FINALIST of Amsterdam Cycling Bridge Competition
HYBRID-GE aims to unite two sides of Amsterdam with a place that suits all paces of life, creating pedestrian-friendly pockets of calm alongside an efficient cycle path. It accommodates both tourists and locals by providing for a variety of activities including fishing, incorporated views for photography and easy transitions between pedestrian and cycling routes that bring people together. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, the bridge offers views of Amsterdam Central Station, Java-eiland, Nemo Science Museum and the Hamerkwartier development. The name HYBRID-GE describes its function as a union between the two distinct characters of the North and South banks of the river.
HYBRID-GE draws on the heritage and character of the River Ij upon which it sits. Its timber clad materiality and hull inspired shape reflects Amsterdam’s historical shipbuilding industry, while its undulating form captures the beauty of water in both movement and stasis. The cycle path provides a direct, unobstructed route across the river. Pedestrians can branch away from the cycle path to explore the playful steps that weave in and out of the main curve, and can even view the exposed structure of the bridge where the walkway briefly slips under the main thoroughfare.
