Let’s celebrate humanity’s connection with H20 using 5 urban elements to concoct a holistically delectable riverfront place. It will contain spatial porosity, layered landscape forms, and articulated edges – all with a touch of water culture.
We will…
…transform De Kromhouthal Event Center into a multidimensional, open air, aquaculture center containing hydroponic agriculture and a marine life learning center – all while continuing to host extravagant events.
…excavate the private block to the north-east of the site to cultivate a public wetland habitat, equipped with a boardwalk for people to connect with the natural ecosystem and experience Netherland’s native flora and fauna.
…articulate the north-west edge of the KNSM Island into a water recreation pier, equipped with river filtrated lap pools and a kayak dock.
…arch a terraced pedestrian bridge over the Ij and populate its surface with public hot baths, tree canopies, and local marine sculptures.
…weave the elevated bike garden bridge through it all, puncturing De Kromhouthal, looping around existing buildings, overlooking the wetlands, merging with the terraced arch, wrapping down around a riverfront plaza, and topping a boat rental shop and café.
Voila! A recipe for an urban aqua-oasis of public spaces making a delightful place.
