TimeCycle memorializes and carries the history of Amsterdam Noord down to the South bank of the IJ river and the city’s traditionally historic core. On and around the bridge, one can explore the collective memory of the city, while following individual paths and reflecting on personal histories and experiences.
A sequential journey starts from the North bank where spaces for arts and crafts, exhibits and workshops, encircled by the bridge, pick up the threads of Amsterdam Noord’s industrial heritage to amplify the remnants that are still alive in the present-day city. As cyclists and pedestrians move along the bridge, stories of the past and present are dynamically exhibited on the high side walls that open up to framed views of the surroundings. Midway through, a platform extends to host a productive landscape evoking the agricultural past and traditional cultivation of the land in Amsterdam’s North bank. At the other end, a waterfront park allows users to be immersed into the memory and physical experience of water and the river. The materiality of the bridge – a shiny, reflective metal – plays a double symbolic role; a reminder of the industrial past and a mirror, a self- image and esoteric discovery of individual and collective, past, present and future identities.
