The complexity of crossing the bridge with cargo ships forced us to construct unproportioned heightened bridges which harm the accessibility and the transportation of the citizens. By thinking opposite, instead of heightening the bridges we can lower the water level. I am proposing a cargo ship elevator.
When a ship desire to cross the bridge, it will enter to the “elevator” by sailing through the water lock. By pumping out the water from the facility the level of the water is decreasing and enabling the cargo ship to cross the bridge safely.
The pumped water is transferred to two parks located at the landing of each side of the bridge, creating a wetland park with high ecological value and extensive recreation. This park, acting as an iconic landmark in Amsterdam, will have water pumped in and out to its water streams thus creating an unprecedented experience, and reduces urban heat island.
