How can an infrastructural element be transformed into a landmark, considering user experience and one’s responses to different visual perceptions?
The project was designed not only working as a connector but as an extension of the city into an elevated street. It becomes part of the circulation, forming a network with the existing infrastructural connections on both sides of the river, accommodating sustainable mobility and public spaces. A walk through the bridge turns into a journey, exploring the city from different angles, focusing the views of the users to significant locations. First, towards the City Center and the Central Station, then towards Amsterdam Noord and finally landing on IJplein. As a result, Viewfrastructure becomes more than just a physical connection, it emerges as a visual link between the two parts of the city.
It is elevated 22 meters with a 6% slope, accommodating two-container cargo ships. Exaggerating the linearity of Java Island, it extends above water, were two ramps meet into one edge, welcoming pedestrians and bikers into a viewpoint. On the ground, the structure frames the view while users walk on water. Monumentality is provided enhancing the relationship of water and surrounding space, transforming it into a landmark.
