–EDITORIAL PICK of Re-Nature Rome Competition
The project DANDELION takes inspiration from nature itself by referring ‘’dandelion’’ plant anatomy. It is a search of ideal ecosystems to reconstitute the lost biodiversity in Rome. It aims to find the balance between nature and civilization and provide a qualified environment by connecting divided green areas and spreading the extinct species. DANDELION is designed as a technological flying artificial ecosystem to enhance biodiversity in the city.
DANDELION is an unmanned mechanism with its 20 meters radius which consists of 4 main parts: collectors, technical core, artificial ecosystem and elastic arms. The collectors collect the extinct species’ samples and water & land materials to create the ideal ecosystem. Technical core filled with helium gas to float in the air, consists of water & soil reservoirs, storages, seed bank, sanitization – aerodynamic – energy (generated with the solar panels) saving units and a fan preventing overheating. The main part, artificial ecosystem provides ideal conditions for the reproduction of the extinct species by using the technical space materials. Another part, DANDELION’s moving elastic arms inflate elastic bubbles and spread ecosystem pieces in the bubbles. Finally, with the dissolution of these bubbles, extinct species are spread around the city and enhance the biodiversity.
