For millennia humankind have settled around bodies of water, perhaps most notably rivers. Rome is no exception, as it was established along the banks of the Tiber. Today, the riverfront is inaccessible and unsafe, as well as littered and run-down. The massive embankments offer little refuge for wildlife and people prefer to stay away.
Our proposal aims to change that. An iron structure, made up of a grid of 500x500x500 mm cubes, stretch from the riverbank up the embankments, shaped like an arch in a nod to the classical Roman architecture.
The grid can be filled with several different insets: planters, insect hotels, birdhouses, mussel cages, algae planters, as well as recycling bins, and waste-catching nets. Some can be placed below the water’s surface, some high above, to create a structure that facilitates the reinvigoration of the riverfront for the wildlife, all the while providing an interesting new addition to the urban fabric creating places where people want to spend time.
The arches can be placed all along the riverfront and the inserts can easily be adapted to season, water level, and more. We want to restore the Tiber to its fabled glory, ensuring that the eternal city lives on.
