– JOURNAL PICK of 2020 Monument Competition
The ancient story of the tower of Babylon represents humankind coming together for a common cause and then separated by the power of god, dissolving their common force.. These antitheses echo throughout history; us versus them, female versus male, even human versus non-human, orchestrated by an elitist power wanting to uphold the divide. Despite a force majeure imposing social separation and isolation, during 2020 we have seen a rise in people coming together. Together to mobilize, to organize, to revolutionize, gathering in demonstrations, demanding change. Change of racial equality, of environmental action, of democratic values. A demand for revolution.
A monument for 2020 should represent this revolution. A monument to embody these movements, growing, changing, and ever evolving. A structure inviting people to come together for a common cause, to give them space within a city, in a square or enclosed within nature. In such unprecedented times and an uncertain future, it will be a monument for all of us who want the world to be different, we who want the world to come together again in a time forcing us to be physically apart.
It will be the Babylon of 2020.
