Monuments are of significant importance to society, man-made structures yet oddly innate in their artificiality.
Unlike varying species of plants or animals, conditions normally associated with the natural world, the atmosphere, the sky, is a genuinely shared entity across the entirety of our planet. It is something continuous and overlapping, transcendent and ignorant of place, time, nationality or culture.
These monuments are a place for reflection, and refraction. They are simple and humbling in their design, a body that is both reflective and transparent. A betwixt surface that emphasises this stereotypically blue element. A pool or a pond (viewed from above or below) that on further inspection, is a framed snapshot of the sky.
The piece is intended to be repeated and replicated in multiple locations around the globe, highlighting this shared, familiar and somewhat comforting blanket. Its function is to emphasise the sunlight or weather, the time of day, that time of year, or that specific site on our planet. Each and every location, be it in a densely populated mega-city or a barren natural landscape, will help showcase a version of the sky in that moment. A unifying yet slightly differing perspective on ourselves.
