This year we are reminded of those who serve behind the scenes. It is the average person, who’s not so average. One person’s impact reaches far beyond our realization.
This is a celebration of community; a unified body of individuals that allows society to exist. This ‘monument’ celebrates and recognizes society by embracing the individual. For without the individual, there is no community.
Reflecting upon how everyone in a community contributes in their own way, this monument invites the individual to make their mark. With each marking, scratch, and indent, the street is transformed. The street stands as a metaphor for progression. A reminder of the strength in a community that works together. Street objects: the bench, the light, the bike rack, and bus stop, standard features in our daily lives, are rethought to create a progression of ‘monumental arches’. Average objects are given significance as a reminder to celebrate one’s contribution towards society as they go about their daily routines. By breaking free of the grandeur of traditional monuments, and embedding itself in everyday life, this ‘monument’ celebrates the ordinary. It creates a new narrative behind the importance of each individual’s contribution towards society.
