XX XX
The year 2020 will definitely be remembered as a challenging year in XXI century. The most global thing that sculpted it has been the worldwide pandemic.
The main idea that I concentrate on in the monument is the so called idea of “social distancing”. Due to the pandemic, the whole world was compelled to stay at home and isolate. We physically distanced, but spiritually united. Medical staff risked by volunteering, people sang from their balconies to empathize and entertain each other, customers supported their favorite, local restaurants and businesses, physical events were replaced by digital ones. Although formally separated, community came together.
The monument contains four concrete pyramids that have “X” engraved in their bases, symbolizing the year 2020 in Latin numbers – XX XX. The size of the base is 20 meters in height and 10 meters in width. The pyramids lean on a 2-meter cube made of brass that plays the role of a capstone and prevents the construction from collapsing. The pyramids create a dome under which people could gather long after the pandemic has gone.
The pyramids represent “us” as human beings. They are separated, yet bonded owing to the brass cube that symbolizes our community in such volatile times.
